About the Concert

An Evening of Musical Diversity with Benjamin Schüle and Flurin Herzig

The upcoming concert with marimbist Benjamin Schüle and tenor Flurin Herzig promises an exceptional musical experience. The two talented musicians will present a diverse program, ranging from contemporary compositions to baroque masterpieces.

Program

1. “Song of Almah” (2006) by Andrew Beall

This impressive three-movement work – “Rose of Sharon,” “Yearning for,” and “Cedar of Lebanon” – takes the audience on an emotional sonic journey, from delicate melodies to powerful rhythms. With a total duration of about 20 minutes, it offers a deep insight into the modern possibilities of the marimba.

2. Suite No. VI in D Major, BWV 1012 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750)

Originally composed for solo cello, the six movements – Prélude, Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gavotte I/II, and Gigue – take on a unique sound when performed on the marimba. Benjamin Schüle’s interpretation promises to bring the timeless beauty of Bach’s music to life in a fresh light.

3. “Sei Ariette di Metastasio,” Op. 95 by Mauro Giuliani (1781–1829)

This collection of six arias – “Ombre amene,” “Fra tutte le pene,” “Quando sarà quel dì,” “Le dimore amor non ama,” “Ad altro laccio,” and “Di due bell’anime” – is based on texts by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. For this concert, Benjamin Schüle has arranged the arias for marimba, promising a unique sonic combination with Flurin Herzig’s expressive vocals, creating an emotional conclusion to the evening.

About the Artists

Benjamin Schüle is an accomplished marimbist who masters his instrument with passion and virtuosity. He is known for his innovative interpretations and commitment to expanding the marimba repertoire. Through his own arrangements and collaborations with other artists, he enriches the music scene and continually offers the audience new listening experiences.

Flurin Herzig began his musical training in various choirs and on the violin in his hometown of Schaffhausen. After completing his high school diploma with a focus on music and solo singing, he studied at the PreCollege of the Zurich University of the Arts with Scot Weir. Since 2021, he has continued his studies with Marcel Boone at the Basel University of Music. One of his many interests is song interpretation; for example, he recently worked on and performed Schumann’s “Dichterliebe.” He has also received further guidance from Margreet Honig and Rosa Dominguez. Flurin regularly sings in professional ensembles such as the Balthasar Neumann Choir, La Cetra Vocal Ensemble Basel, and Verba Vocalis Basel. As a soloist, he has interpreted works such as Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Arvo Pärt’s “Passio,” Handel’s “Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day,” and various Bach cantatas.

This concert offers a unique opportunity to experience two outstanding musicians in a multifaceted program. Music lovers should not miss this event.
